Having employees resign from time to time is inevitable in every company. Truth be told, even the best employer will inevitably have employees resign here and there. Keeping a lookout for tell-tale signs of unhappy or dissatisfied employees is vital for a variety of reasons. Not only does it help you nip the issue in the bud, it can also help you to ensure that morale amongst the remaining employees remains high. Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all answer for this question. Employees resign from jobs for a plethora of reasons. However, here are some of the top reasons employees resign, and some tips on how to deal with these. 

  • Little to No Career Progression

The first and one of the most common reasons for resignation, is limited growth in the company. Career progression is an important factor to many employees. It;s normal for employees to have a strong desire to grow at a company, and the lack of growth opportunities is discouraging for many. Ultimately, this can result in employees leaving their jobs to seek development opportunities elsewhere. 

Employees need to feel recognised and validated for the work that they do at their company. As such, employers should be mindful of recognising hard work and praising employees for doing their jobs well. In addition, clear career paths should be set and shared with employees so as to give them both a sense of security and direction in their careers.

  • Feeling Underpaid

Another common reason for employee resignation is dissatisfaction with the pay one is receiving for their work. Employees can and will easily find out what their other peers are earning. Finding out that they are being paid less can make them feel discouraged, demotivated and undervalued, all of which can ultimately lead to their resignation. 

A part of ensuring that employees stay motivated and valued would be by offering them competitive salaries. This often does play a big role in motivating employees to stay with a company for a longer period of time. 

  • Their Work Feels Directionless

Most employees don’t just want to do mindless, aimless work. A good workplace would be one that gives employees new opportunities to grow and develop their skills, as well as to apply what they have learned. When employees get the chance to use their skills and abilities on the job, it gives them a sense of purpose and accomplishment in what they do. 

Setting new goals and challenges for employees to tackle will not only give them the chance to stretch their skills and abilities further, it also helps them feel useful and keeps them interested.

Employee departures are inevitable in each and every company. However, it is also a good stepping stone for one to gain a better understanding on possible areas for improvement within the company. Pay attention to the feedback that employees are giving as this can be used to greatly reduce the turnover rate within your company.
